I’m still here

Well it’s been five months since the last post, I guess it’s time for an update, right? ;) I’ve been doing pretty good. I’m currently on summer vacation and head back to school in two weeks. I haven’t been up to very much, just relaxing and spending time with friends. Some highlights:

  • I decided to take up guitar as a hobby. I’m starting out learning acoustic, but I may move on to electric in the future. I bought a nice Fender DG-8S acoustic guitar. It’s not a very expensive guitar, but it is a great beginner guitar and is suitable for my current needs. I’m not taking lessons, but instead I thought I would just try to teach myself for now through the internet and books. They offer guitar classes at school, so I might take those later. So far things are going well.
  • I took a trip to the Coinstar machine and found out I had over $200 in coins! That was a nice feeling. :) So in a way, I paid for my guitar entirely with coins.
  • I picked up Rainbow Six Vegas for PS3. It’s an awesome game, very fun online. I also got into the Home beta and was in the Warhawk beta. Those are great as well.
  • I spent a good amount of summer occupied with a summer online class for school. In terms of school, I feel refreshed and am on a clean slate. I’m ready to start the next semester.
  • I went down to Santa Cruz twice this summer. I took a panoramic of the beach, which you can see here.
  • I started going to the gym nearly six nights a week.  I’m becoming healthy and am starting to get in shape.  I’m also eating healthier.  This is resulting in a better lifestyle for me, and I’m proud of that.

I’ll try to update more often, but I’m not making any guarantees. I don’t think anyone reads this anyways.

PS3 saves lives

Today Folding@home was released for the PS3. If you didn’t know, Folding@home is a distributed computing project run by Stanford University where people can contribute their spare computer processing power to simulate the folding of proteins to help better understand diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and various cancers. The research done in this project may one day lead to a cure for diseases that take the lives of so many people each year.

This project has been available for computers for quite some time now, but today it was introduced for the Sony PlayStation 3. Checking out the stats, in less than one day, the PS3 has already surpassed the Windows platform in terms of TFLOPS power. In one day, 7,000 PS3s have achieved what 150,000 PCs have been doing for years. I think that’s very impressive! It shows just how powerful the PS3 really is with its Cell processor. It makes me proud to own a PS3! I hope this research will pay off greatly one day.

The Number 23

I saw The Number 23 a few days ago (on the 23rd, opening day). I liked the movie, despite the bad reviews it got. The plot was interesting, with nice twists and an unexpected ending. I thought Jim Carrey did a good job in the movie, it shows he can perform well in non comedic roles. Overall I thought it was a good movie and I recommend it, in spite of its reviews.

What’s funny is that once we left the theater, we kept finding instances of the number 23. It was pretty wild!

  • The parking garage’s address number had 23 in it.
  • The odometer on our car was 23k.
  • The car in front of us was a Mercedes-Benz ML 320 (3 + 20 = 23).
  • The time added up to 23.
  • Our birthdays mathematically came out to 23.
